Positive Air Shut-Off Chevy LLY/LBZ/LMM Duramax 2004.5-2010, BD part 1036712.
Diesel engine runaway happens when the engine finds a fuel source other than its own: crankcase oil past worn seals, or hydrocarbon vapour drawn in through the intake. Once it does, shutting off the key does nothing — the engine has stopped needing the fuel system, and it will keep accelerating until something breaks or it runs out of what it is drinking.
A positive air shut-off is a valve in the intake that closes and starves the engine of air, which is the only thing that reliably stops a runaway. BD build both manually triggered and electronic versions.
It is a part you hope never to use. The argument for fitting one is the same as for a fire extinguisher in the house.
