A factory alternator is sized for a factory truck. Add lights, a winch, a compressor, a fridge, a second battery or a serious stereo and the margin disappears — the symptoms are dim lights at idle and batteries that never quite come back up.

The factory alternator on these trucks is rated at 110 amp, which is modest even when new — and they are known to fail without warning once they have some age on them. This unit puts out 240 amp.

This large-case alternator uses six-phase hairpin stator technology with twin rectifier plates and twelve heavy diodes.

Mechman build these as six-phase alternators rather than the conventional three-phase. Six phases put out a smoother, denser current and draw less engine horsepower per kilowatt produced, which is why the output figures are achievable in a case this size.
