High-pressure oil pump for the 1996–1997 OBS 7.3L Power Stroke.
The 7.3 Power Stroke uses a HEUI fuel system, so the injectors are fired by high-pressure engine oil rather than by a mechanical pump. The HPOP supplies that pressure. When it wears, the truck cranks but will not start, starts hard when cold, or loses power under load — all symptoms of injection control pressure falling below what the injectors need.
This is the HP005X, the 17-degree swash-plate pump fitted to 1996 and 1997 trucks.
The year split matters more here than on almost any other part of this engine. 1994 and 1995 trucks use the HP004X, which houses the anti-drainback check valve inside the pump itself. From 1996 Ford moved that function into a redesigned front timing cover, so the pumps are not interchangeable in either direction. If your truck is a 1994 or 1995, this is not the right pump.
